Elland sits on the River Calder where the valley widens slightly before narrowing again toward Sowerby Bridge. It is an ancient settlement with a mix of historic stone buildings, Victorian terraces, and more recent development — and its position in the valley means Elland properties face some very specific roofing challenges.

The lower parts of Elland, particularly near the river and the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal, are at risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
